A wild elephant was hit by the night mail train traveling from Trincomalee to Colombo last night (03) in Puwakpitiya, Habarana.
The incident occurred between Habarana and Palugaswewa.
According to a wildlife officer, the elephant is estimated to be around 20 years old. Its front right leg was broken in the collision, and it was found lying near the railway track, according to Ada Derana’s correspondent.
Residents said the railway line in that area provides a clear view for a long distance, alleging negligence by the driver.
Wildlife officers confirmed that treatment for the injured elephant will begin today (04) by the veterinary unit in Pandulagama.
It is suspected that the elephant was attempting to cross the railway track from the Hurulu Forest Reserve in Habarana towards Puwakpitiya village at the time of the incident.
Wildlife officers from Ritigala and Kekirawa are conducting investigations.
