Three suspects have been arrested for allegedly aiding and abetting the shooting incident at Sahaspura in Borella, which left two people dead and three others injured.
The suspects, aged 24, 25, and 40, are residents of Borella and Dematagoda.
This brings the total number of arrests connected to the incident to four. On Saturday (9), police arrested another suspect — a 23-year-old resident of Borella — also for aiding and abetting the crime. He is currently being questioned under a three-day detention order.
The shooting occurred on Thursday night (7) near the Sahaspura Sirisara Housing Complex in Borella, when two unidentified assailants on a motorcycle opened fire around 8:40 p.m. on a group of youths decorating the sports ground.
The attackers used a T-56 assault rifle and fled on the same motorcycle. Five youths were injured in the attack and hospitalized.
One victim, a 28-year-old from Kelaniya, died the following morning, while three others remained in critical condition. Another victim, a 23-year-old, succumbed to his injuries last night (10) at the Colombo National Hospital, raising the death toll to two.
Police have recorded statements from more than 10 witnesses as investigations continue.
