Sri Lanka Aviation Unit honoured for outstanding service in MINUSCA

The Sri Lanka Aviation Unit in Bria, deployed under the United Nations mandate in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), has been officially commended for successfully executing a high-risk Casualty Evacuation (CASEVAC) mission.

The commendation was presented to the unit, led by the 10th Aviation Contingent Commander, Group Captain Uditha De Silva, for their professionalism, commitment, and expertise in providing critical air support.

The mission involved the urgent evacuation of three severely injured UN personnel from Zemio using an Mi-17 helicopter (UNO 326P), under highly hostile conditions including unstable tactical situations, dusty landings, night operations with NVG, and adverse weather. Despite these challenges, the team’s timely response ensured the safe transfer of the casualties to Bria for urgent treatment, saving lives.

The crew included Wing Commander Ishan Thibbotumunuwe (Captain), Wing Commander Nadun Deneththi (Co-pilot), Flight Sergeant Chandana AMG, Sergeant Perera GGPK, Corporal Weerasinghe KPS, and Corporal Rodrigo DVMP.

Since December 2024, the 10th Sri Lanka Aviation Unit has successfully completed 16 CASEVAC missions and saved 18 lives under hazardous conditions.
