The Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has issued a special statement honouring the bravery of the pilot who lost his life while conducting rescue operations for flood-affected residents near Lunuwila, Wennappuwa.
The incident occurred yesterday (30) when a Bell-212 helicopter engaged in relief efforts attempted an emergency landing to distribute food and essential supplies to a group gathered near the Lunuwila Bridge. According to the SLAF, the presence of people standing on the bridge caused it to become unstable, leading to the tragic accident during the landing attempt.
The co-pilot and three other Air Force personnel onboard survived and are currently receiving treatment at the Marawila Hospital.
However, Wing Commander Nirmal Siyambalapitiya, the helicopter’s Captain Pilot, succumbed to his injuries despite the efforts of the medical team. The SLAF described him as a highly skilled and dedicated aviator with over 3,000 flying hours to his name.
The Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe, has appointed a Board of Inquiry to investigate the incident.
