The Department of Irrigation has launched urgent restoration work on canals and reservoirs damaged during the recent floods triggered by Cyclone Ditwah, with the objective of resuming water supply to paddy fields and other key cultivation areas.
According to Engineer L. S. Sooriyabandara, Director of Irrigation (Hydrology and Disaster Management), temporary restoration efforts are already in progress to safeguard heavily affected agricultural lands.
He added that the security forces, farming communities, and several voluntary organizations are actively supporting the restoration operations. Once the repair work is completed, the department plans to release water to revive agricultural activities and associated economic sectors.
