President calls for unity and collective reconstruction in Thai Pongal message

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has called on all Sri Lankans to strengthen national unity and work together in the country’s reconstruction efforts, in his message marking Thai Pongal Day.

In his message issued today (15), the President highlighted the spiritual, cultural and environmental significance of Thai Pongal, describing it as a celebration of gratitude, renewal and hope. He noted that the festival, observed with devotion by Hindu communities worldwide, is dedicated to expressing gratitude to the Sun God, to cattle that support agriculture, and to nature itself.

The President said Thai Pongal symbolises prosperity and thankfulness, while also encouraging people to move forward with courage and confidence toward the future.

Referring to the challenges facing the country, President Dissanayake said Sri Lanka is currently undertaking the largest reconstruction effort in its recent history following a major natural disaster. He stressed that this effort requires unity, determination and collective responsibility from all citizens.

He further noted that the festival holds special relevance at a time when the importance of reconnecting with nature is felt more strongly than ever, adding that Thai Pongal’s deep connection to nature adds meaning not only to individual lives but also to society as a whole.

Expressing optimism, the President said the nation firmly believes there is light after every darkness and reaffirmed the commitment to move forward with unity and resolve to build “A Thriving Nation – A Beautiful Life.”

President Dissanayake extended his heartfelt wishes for a joyful and prosperous Thai Pongal to Sri Lankan Tamils and Tamils around the world.
