Over 375kg of Heroin, ‘Ice’ and Two Firearms Seized from Fishing Vessel Off Southern Coast

Authorities have disclosed the full details of the large narcotics haul recovered from a multi-day fishing vessel intercepted by the Sri Lanka Navy off the southern coast and brought ashore last evening.

The vessel, suspected of trafficking drugs, was intercepted on Thursday (20) during a joint operation carried out by the Sri Lanka Navy and the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB), following intelligence received by security forces.

The fishing vessel, along with six local fishermen on board, was escorted to the Tangalle Fisheries Harbour last evening.

Police confirmed that a former Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) member of the Pannala Pradeshiya Sabha was later arrested by the PNB in connection with the case.

According to the Navy, the seized items include:

  • 115 kg of heroin packed into 100 packets across 5 bags
  • 261 kg of crystal methamphetamine (‘Ice’) packed into 200 packets across 13 bags

In total, the haul amounts to more than 375 kilograms of illegal narcotics.

Additionally, two firearms—a revolver, a pistol, and two magazines—found on board the vessel were also taken into custody.

Investigations are ongoing.
