No injustice to students of Gampaha Wickramarachchi University – PM

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya assured Parliament yesterday (09) that the government will ensure no student faces injustice at the Gampaha Wickramarachchi University of Indigenous Medicine.

Responding to a question from MP Ramanathan Archchuna, the PM noted that a committee has proposed two main recommendations:

  1. Affiliate courses with other universities or assign students to similar programs.
  2. Maintain the university with improved resources and facilities to continue existing programs.

She emphasized that whichever path is chosen, students’ degree specializations will not change. If certain unique programs exist only at this university, additional support will be discussed with stakeholders.

The government also plans to:

  • Revise curricula for certain degree programs,
  • Ensure job opportunities by engaging potential employers,
  • Relocate faculties to more suitable facilities in Gampaha,
  • Suspend new admissions temporarily for some faculties until reforms are finalized,
  • Investigate irregularities in staff recruitment and take legal action.

The PM stressed that solutions will be implemented before the first batch completes their degrees.
