GMOA: Transfer Delays Disrupt Health Sector, Affecting Over 23,000 Doctors

Colombo – The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) has raised alarm over serious disruptions in Sri Lanka’s health sector, attributing them to delays and irregularities in the annual transfer process of over 23,000 doctors.

GMOA spokesperson Dr. Chamil Wijesinghe stated that despite having clearly defined procedures in the Ministry of Health’s institutional guidelines, the Medical Services Unit has made unilateral decisions, resulting in widespread complications.

“More than 10,000 doctors have not yet received their scheduled transfers, and around 50% of doctors are currently not stationed at their designated hospitals,” he revealed.

The GMOA warned that such administrative failures could severely impact the functionality and efficiency of the national healthcare system.
