The Badulla–Colombo main road has been restricted to a single lane after a landslide struck the stretch between Beragala and Haldummulla last night (24), police said.
The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) warned that the affected area remains highly vulnerable to additional landslides due to ongoing rainfall.
Officials from the Road Development Authority (RDA) are expected to carry out an inspection at the site this morning (25) to assess the stability of the slope and determine further safety measures.
Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) stated that authorities are considering reopening the Lower Kadugannawa Road—currently closed due to landslide risks—to a single lane. However, Acting Director General K. M. Bandara said the road will only be opened during periods without rain, and no final decision has been made yet.
The NBRO added that its landslide warning remains in effect for seven districts, including Badulla, Kandy, Kegalle, Matale, Kurunegala, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura. Residents in these areas have been advised to remain alert due to the continuing adverse weather.
A Level 2 warning has also been issued for Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, and Colombo districts, with authorities urging residents to exercise caution.
According to the Department of Irrigation, water levels in the Kalu, Gin, and Nilwala rivers have risen significantly as a result of heavy rainfall. The Nilwala River has reached overflow levels in Thalagahagoda and Panadugama.
The department further reported that six spill gates of the Deduru Oya Reservoir have been opened by four feet each, releasing 16,200 cubic feet of water per second.
