‘Ishara Sewwandi’ brought back to Sri Lanka from Nepal

‘Ishara Sewwandi’, the fugitive female suspect wanted in connection with the murder of underworld figure Sanjeewa Kumara Samararatne, alias ‘Ganemulla Sanjeewa’, who was arrested in Nepal yesterday (14), has been brought back to Sri Lanka.

The aircraft carrying Ishara Sewwandi and five other arrested suspects landed at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) at 6.54 p.m., according to an Ada Derana reporter.

The group is expected to be handed over to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) for further questioning.

Earlier, two Special Task Force (STF) officers were dispatched to Nepal to assist the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in bringing back the six suspects, including Ishara Sewwandi, who is identified as a key suspect in the killing of Ganemulla Sanjeewa.

‘Ishara Sewwandi’ was arrested in Nepal along with five others during a joint operation conducted by the CID and Nepal Police. Among the arrested individuals is reportedly a close associate of ‘Kehelbaddara Padme’, who is currently in police custody.

The shooting incident took place on February 19, inside Hulftsdorp Magistrate’s Court No. 05, where Ganemulla Sanjeewa was shot dead.

The 25-year-old suspect, Pingpura Dewage Ishara Sewwandi, is believed to have assisted the gunman involved in the assassination.

Since the day of the incident, she had been in hiding, and her whereabouts remained unknown until recently.

Last month, the CID revealed that Ishara Sewwandi had fled Sri Lanka following the court shooting, based on information obtained during interrogations of underworld leader ‘Kehelbaddara Padme’ and others, who were earlier arrested in Jakarta, Indonesia, and brought back to the country.
