170 Police Officers Challenge ASP Promotions in Supreme Court

Colombo, Sept. 26 (Agencies) – A group of 170 Chief Inspectors and Inspectors of Police have filed three Fundamental Rights (FR) petitions before the Supreme Court, challenging the recent promotion of 45 officers to the rank of Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).

The petitions, filed by Attorney-at-Law Manjula Balasooriya, name the Inspector General of Police (IGP), the newly promoted ASPs, and members of the National Police Commission (NPC) as respondents.

According to the petitioners, 45 Inspectors were promoted on September 25 based on the results of a limited competitive examination. They allege that one of the exam papers had been leaked, while the announcement of results was delayed in a questionable manner.

The petitions further argue that, unlike previous promotion rounds where seniority played a key role, this time promotions were granted solely on academic performance, disregarding professional service and qualifications.

Petitioners also claim that several irregularities occurred during the conduct of the examination. They are seeking a Supreme Court declaration that their fundamental rights were violated, along with an order to annul the exam results.
