According to the results released so far in the 2025 Local Government Election, the National People’s Power (NPP) is leading in the majority of seats but has only secured a clear majority in 103 of the 268 local bodies announced. In around 20 councils, the NPP and opposition parties are neck-and-neck, while the remaining bodies show majorities for opposition parties. Political analysts warn that this mixed outcome could create complications in forming governing councils. As per election rules, a party or group must hold over 50% of seats in a council to directly appoint a chairperson and deputy. Otherwise, council members must collectively agree on the appointments without Election Commission intervention.
